SPF 10….

Filed under: SPF — dianabananapancakes @ 2:16 pm

My title just kinda worked out that way…hehe…Today is Stuff Portrait Friday, brought to us by Random and Odd. She puts up a theme and you take pictures based on that theme. She put this week’s theme as “luggage” and so I did the predictable and photographed my luggage, I go check her photos out and she changed her word from luggage to baggage and since I already took all these photos, I’m going to go ahead and post them because its still “luggage” or “baggage” either way you look at it, lol. Of course, I have a story behind EVERYTHING….so here we go…

This is my current piece of luggage, one of those nifty rolling suitcases. This one at the time I purchased it was the right size for carry on luggage. That was 5 years ago when I first moved here to West Virginia. By the time I used it for the first time in April 2004, it was no longer small enough for carry on, they changed the dimensions, so it became check-in luggage. I haven’t used it since. That was the trip Ian and I took to California for a family friend’s wedding and to see my friends/family, Ian’s first trip to Disneyland. Not sure if I will use this one for Hawaii or get another one…we’ll see as we get closer. Probably just use this one and spend more money in Hawaii instead, hehe.

This is my “old school” suitcase. It is HARD bodied and its a good ole Samsonite. This was my dad’s, had it for years, gave it to me to use. I last used this when we moved from California to WV….see the label? Oh yeah, and my sister put a dinosaur sticker on it years ago when dad first gave it to me….this was my youngest sis who is now in college. She was 10 I think?

This suitcase has seen better days. Its not that thick material on the top, and its starting to look its age. THIS suitcase has been just about everywhere with me. I’ve had this one since I was in junior high, just for a time line, that was about 1985. Its been to various states, been to Mexico on a cruise, been everywhere with me, except Japan. I had to buy a new suitcase for the college marching band/dance team trip to Japan because I needed more ROOM, but then that new suitcase was stolen the day we were supposed to turn in our luggage, so right before the trip to Japan, literally 1 day before. I was devastated, family photos were also in that stolen luggage to show to my mom’s family who I was going to meet, gifts for my homestays and gifts for my mom’s family…all my clothes, and a couple of pieces of jewelry that I took off for practice, and stuffed in one of the pockets before the luggage was due to be turned in for the trip, including my only diamonds I ever owned (earrings) and my high school class ring. That night I was sobbing like crazy when I realized it was stolen. I was embarrassed to walk back into rehearsals like that, but what choice did I have. I had no idea how I was gonna replace all the clothes and gifts and photos for family and homestay…I had no money because the money I worked hard to pay for the trip and save for spending money would have to be used to get me new clothes and such. The marching band and dance team did something amazing for me…they had my back….the band director and just announced for everyone to move their cars so no one else had stuff stolen…and the band rallied together and gave me money to replace my stuff….they literally stood in line and handed me checks and cash to replace my stuff so I could have things for this trip to Japan, make copies of pics for my family there, buy new gifts for my homestay families and my mom’s family there….all in all I ended up with nearly $1000 and I had 1 day with my mom and my friend to shop for all these things and pack it all up and take it to the college before they took all our baggage to the airport. That group amazed me that day, they were so supportive. I wrote them a thank you note the day we left for the trip, right before we got on the charter buses to the airport…and I couldn’t even read it I was so full of tears, instead the band director read it aloud to everyone. It was an amazing trip.

Anyway, lol, that was long, but there’s more….This black duffel bag (sp?) has also been with me everywhere, from overnight trips to various states to Mexico and to Japan. I bought it for the trip to Japan for my carry-on. My then-boyfriend Sal had decided he would decorate it for me, and he did this for me, it was all gold when it first was done, but over the years its faded. He decorated it with the logo that was on our highlights video for our trip that year, that was also on the programs we used when we performed in Japan.

Can’t wait to see the other stuff, I’m probably the only dufus who just did their actual luggage. Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Wow! You’ve got a lot of baggage. Err… luggage. ๐Ÿ™‚ Those bags hold more than stuff for you. They obviously hold memories, which is way cool. And “Marching Tigers”? That rocks! It sounds like you’ve lived alot of life in 33 years. (according to your profile, that is) Happy SPF!
